Age and Fertility

Home » Fertility Resources » Age and Fertility

While much is spoken about age and fertility, I still see many women who are genuinely surprised by the reduction in fertility from as early as the mid 30’s.  We know that fertility rates decrease significantly as women age beyond the age of 35 years.  While women older than this can and do still achieve pregnancies, the chance per ovulation is decreased.

To make the situation even more difficult for women in this age group, miscarriage rates also increase as a woman’s age increases.  This is almost exclusively a result of the increased proportion of genetically abnormal eggs being released.

Age is not just important for my female patients – we know that men 38 years and older have and increased risk of their partner suffering a miscarriage, regardless of her age.
